'Light Box' | Shadow play

My bottega is the Renaissance sculpture renovation studio. My studiolo is a candle light Renaissance gallery. The client for the proposal is Somerset House. The proposal came out from research about Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe and Rossalind Krauss essay about grids. Moments of light/shadow plays, invisibility and illusion together with controlled grids. Shadows and light play as well as transparency inspired me to design this proposal. Project sits perfectly on the grid of the courtyard of Somerset House. Structural lines of the proposal coincide with lines of Somerset House and the sculpture on the courtyard. Light box which is the square plan building gives the building lightness and good light qualities for workshop. Renaissance gallery is situated in the second building under the ground. Dimmed atmosphere takes back to the epoch and candle light studiolos, which is achieved by little light panels placed on the ground. Both buildings are placed three meters under and above the ground. To get inside the buildings people need to go down the wide ramp where at the end there is the entrance to the bottega either studiolo. Another way to get to buildings is the tunnel- gallery which leads from the lower ground floors of Somerset House to bottega and studiolo. There is placed glass framed studio in the Light Box. Users of the building have opportunity to perfectly see and observe work of sculptors. They can take a sit on the long concrete bench, which comes out of the wall. Studio is placed in the position that visitor can walk around it. From the dark space of West wing, through the beautiful shadow play tunnel which has a view into the dimmed Renaissance gallery to the completely light space. And that is the moment of illusion and surprise.
